Deadline looms for California budget

SACRAMENTO Workers across the state are furious, but the governor says he has no choice, considering the state's $15 billion deficit.

The governor's plan would eliminate 22,000 temporary, part-time and contract workers. It would also roll back salaries for nearly 200,000 state workers to the federal minimum wage of $6.55 an hour.

Full pay would be reinstated once a budget is approved.
