Officers say they spotted him last night near Guava and E streets and began to follow him when he suddenly jumped out of his car and began shooting.
Police returned fire, but say Aguilar managed to escape.
None of the officers were hurt.
Aguilar is wanted for the murder of businessman Gurmohinder Singh outside a U.S. Bank branch last Saturday.
A $21,000 reward is being offered in the case.
