Study: Doctors need to show more empathy

Researchers recorded appointments between doctors and 10 patients at a Veterans Affairs hospital in Houston, Texas. The doctors and patients knew they were being recorded.

Researchers found when patients mentioned concerns about the personal impact of serious diseases, doctors responded with words of empathy only 10 percent of the time.

The study is in the Journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
