Pharmacist gives employees bonuses

BREWTON, Alabama Employees of pharmacy owner Danny Cottrell say they were shocked when their boss handed full-time employees $700 and part-time employees $300.

In all, Cottrell gave out $16,000 all in $2 bills for what he's calling his own stimulus plan.

Cottrell told employees to spend it, preferably at local businesses, and give 15 percent to charity.

When employees at Medical Center Pharmacy were called to a staff meeting, a wave of fear swept through the store.

Employees said they feared the worst and got the surprise of their lives. Some were so overcome, they wept.

One employee said some of her bonus is going toward a new set of tires for her car so she can get to work.

Cottrell is getting lots of praise for taking the initiative.

Cottrell jokes that now employees want him to call another bonus meeting in April, but he says he can't afford that and hopes to see the ripple effect of his stimulus plan in town.

So far, Cottrell's 24 employees have spent the $2 bills at 70 of the town's local businesses, and already, some of those $2 bills are making their way back to Cottrell's pharmacy.
