Woman dragged for blocks underneath car dies

LOS ANGELES Authorities believe the victim was hit at 7th Street and Ceres Avenue at about 2 a.m., and the female driver dragged the woman about 11 blocks to the intersection of 5th and Los Angeles streets. Police had to pull the driver over to get her to stop.

Police identified the victim as 26-year-old Sonya Tauanuu. The suspect was identified as Nancy Lekon, 43.

According to LAPD Lt. Jim Gavin, the accident stemmed from some type of dispute between the driver and the victim.

"It escalated to the point where the driver intentionally ran her over. Unfortunately, she was caught in the front driver wheel and was dragged for almost a mile," Gavin said.

Police believe Lekon was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She is now in police custody for homicide.

Police need the public's help trying to figure out what happened. Anyone with information is urged to call the LAPD at (877) LAPD-24-7.
