OC surfer wins giant-wave contest in Oahu

OAHU Greg Long, a 26-year-old San Clemente resident, won $55,000 for his triumph in "The Eddie," a big wave contest named in honor of surf great Eddie Aikau.

The Eddie is only held when wave heights are consistently 40 feet at Waimea Bay. Tuesday was the first time in five years conditions were right to stage the event.

Long took the top prize, scoring a perfect 100, by making the most of a steep, 50 foot high wave. He is the first Californian to win the title.
