Funding cuts end breast cancer screenings

January 17, 2010 12:00:00 AM PST
A Harbor-UCLA Medical Center program which funds breast cancer screening for hundreds of thousands of women is no longer being supported by the state.

That's because revenue from the state's tobacco tax has dropped dramatically.

The program uses specially trained residents to read mammograms sent in by outreach groups from across the state.

The loss of state funding reportedly means the federal government will pull out its $61 million contribution to the program.
