'34 Plymouth fires up - for awhile

FLINT As Jim Aseltine installs his front seat, his friends take care of other details, with the goal of getting this car Back to the Bricks.

"I just got the tires and wheels on yesterday," Aseltine said as he worked on the car.

"First gas this baby's had in years. I'm confident, though. She will run. Maybe not the first crank."

When she does run, it will be the first time in a long time.

"I've owned this car for 30 years and it's just sat there in pieces. I'll need one of you guys over here to feed it a little gas," he said, talking to others in the shop.

It took a little coaxing, and a little more, but success eventually came to Aseltine and his friends.

"The gas had to be drawn up from the gas tank through the fuel pump. Once the fuel pump has got enough gas in it to start pumping on its own, then it'll run forever," Aseltine said.

"We're good to go. We'll be at Back to the Bricks. I've got to do that for Al Hatch."

Jim is a long time friend of Back to the Bricks Chairman Al Hatch. And Al's offer to organize the volunteer helpers was the push Jim needed to get the car done.

"Did you guys push this out or did you drive it out?" Hatch asked with a chuckle.

"Oh no, we drove it out, Al," Aseltine replied. "We drove it out on its own power."

So 30 years after he bought it, Aseltine is putting his '34 Plymouth on the road.

Thanks to a little help from his friends.

Unfortunately, we got word that Jim will be driving a different car this week. During one of its test drives, the '34 Plymouth quit a half mile from home.

According to Aseltine, the valves are stuck and the back three cylinders have no compression.

Parts are now on order.

Luckily, Jim has several other choices to drive to Back to the Bricks.
