Injured Mavericks surfer's condition upgraded

An Orange County surfer nearly drowned in Northern California at the Mavericks surf spot north of Half Moon Bay.

Encouraging news Tuesday for a San Clemente surfer who nearly drowned after he was pounded by a huge freak wave off Half Moon Bay Saturday.Doctors at Stanford Hospital have upgraded Jacob Trette's condition from critical to fair, three days after he was pulled from the ocean unconscious.

Trette was rescued after he was caught by a freak set of waves, more than 20 feet tall at the Mavericks surf spot off Half Moon Bay.

Hospital officials say he's now conscious, and his "indicators are favorable."
