Liability cap may rise for train crash victims

January 26, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
Victims of the 2008 Metrolink train disaster in Chatsworth could have more money coming their way if a Ventura County congressman has his way.

Rep. Elton Gallegly of Simi Valley has introduced legislation that would raise the liability cap for victims of passenger rail accidents from $200 million to $275 million.

While he said that may not be enough to cover damages, a previous bill raising the cap to $500 million failed.

The crash killed 25 people and injured more than 130 when the Metrolink train ran a red light and slammed into a freight train.
