Dog freed from old smudge pot near Hemet

February 6, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
A dog was rescued near Hemet after his head got stuck in a piece from an old smudge pot, used to prevent frost in orchards.

Nobody knows how he got into the predicament, but he may have been chasing a rodent or other small animal.

Riverside County Animal Control officers freed the 2-year-old dog.

He was placed in a shelter, where workers hope his owner will turn up.

The dog was nicknamed "Smokey" because his face was blackened from soot inside the smudge pot.
