Twenty-four heroes of the Los Angeles City Fire Department were given special awards and commendations Thursday for their actions above and beyond the call of duty.

The firefighters and paramedics were honored for their bravery and courage, and helping to save lives in the face of danger.

The awards, including the Medal of Valor, were presented by Los Angeles City Fire Chief Millage Peaks.

"Serving with integrity and pride, the recipients of these awards exemplify the character of our organization," said Peaks. "They bring praise and honor to the professional public servant."

The award luncheon was organized by the volunteer support organization, the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation.
