OC GOP official censured for Obama photo

O.C. GOP official Marilyn Davenport, who emailed a photo of President Obama as a chimp, is seen outside her Fullerton home to make her first public statement on the matter. She said it was political satire, not racist.

An Orange County Republican official has been censured for sharing an email depicting President Barack Obama as a chimpanzee.

Marilyn Davenport forwarded the email to several friends last month, showing the president's face superimposed over a baby chimp. Below the photo, it read "Now you know why - No birth certificate!"

This week, the local executive committee voted 12-2 in favor of censuring Davenport. It's the highest form of disapproval allowed under the organization's bylaws.

Now serving her fourth elected term, Davenport has been urged by civil rights activists and Orange County GOP Chairman Scott Baugh to resign, but she has said she will not resign.

Baugh said that under state law, members can only be removed from a party position if they move to another jurisdiction, repeatedly fail to show up to meetings or support members of another party.
