Abdul-Jabbar is best known as one of the all-time great basketball players, but he is also a well-regarded author of books on African-American history.
"Young people's lives really depend on how they prepare themselves for life," said Abdul-Jabbar. "So a good education really gives you the foundation for having a meaningful life and being able to do the things you want to do and go the places you want to go in your life."
Abdul-Jabbar is a filmmaker too. He showed the students a clip from his documentary, "On the Shoulders of Giants," which is the story of a pioneering all-black basketball team from Harlem in the 1930s.
