U2's Bono hitchhikes with NHL player Gilbert Brule

VANCOUVER, British Columbia

Bono and his assistant were stranded on the side of a road near Vancouver, British Columbia and were holding their thumbs out, hoping someone would stop and give them a ride.

That someone was National Hockey League player Gilbert Brule, who was driving with his girlfriend. Brule said he couldn't believe his eyes.

"We kept driving for a while, and I'm like, 'come on, turn around, turn around.' So she finally turned around," said Brule. "I yelled out the window and he waved at me, he said it was him, so I got him in the car and we took him to Horsehoe Bay."

Bono rewarded the couple for their generosity with backstage tickets to the U2 concert.

Bono even gave the couple a shout-out on stage, saying, "I like ice hockey because people who play ice hockey are the kind of people who pick up hitchhikers."
