Fontana police say they tried to stop a car for a vehicle code violation early Sunday morning, but the suspect pulled out a knife, jumped back into the car and took off.
The chase apparently reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour.
Officers said they fired on the suspect when he tried to use his car as a weapon.
The man's father says his son was about to graduate from college.
The suspect's name has not been released.
