Robert Redd, 51, is charged with shooting 19-year-old Joseph Rubalcava and burying him in a shallow grave.
The victim's family went searching for Rubalcava after he had been missing for several days.
They found his body buried in Redd's yard on the 8500 block of Pico Vista Road. They called police and Redd was arrested.
Redd was arrested Friday and jailed in lieu of $1 million bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Redd is accused of shooting Rubalcava once in the head with a handgun on or about July 18, according to the L.A. County District Attorney's Office.
Redd was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon in Whittier Superior Court.
Redd could face 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
