LA County Supervisors nix sheriff's proposed parolee management takeover

Who will supervise parolees in LA County now that the state is handing over that responsibility to local governments?

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors rejected a proposal Tuesday to have the L.A. County Sheriff's Department help supervise thousands of parolees.

Sheriff Lee Baca argued recently that his deputies can do a better job rehabilitating parolees than the county can.

But the supervisors decided to leave the L.A. County Probation Department handle it.

The state will begin early release of thousands of non-violent offenders this fall.

Governor Jerry Brown has shifted parole responsibilities from the state to local governments to save money.
