Tanning beds riskier than previously thought, study says

LOS ANGELES

New research in "The Journal of Investigative Dermatology" suggests the main type of rays used in tanning beds penetrate to a deep layer of skin vulnerable to cancer-causing changes.

It had been thought that the deeper UVA rays used in tanning beds were less harmful than UVB rays, which mostly burn the surface of the skin. But the study indicates the deep penetration may actually be more harmful.
