19 Americans sent to criminal trial in Egypt

CAIRO, Egypt Security officials said 43 people total have been referred to the trial as part of an investigation into U.S.-funded groups promoting democracy and human rights in the country.

This puts a further strain on Egypt's relationship with the United States, as Egypt's campaign against the organizations has already angered Washington. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told Egypt's foreign minister on Saturday that failing to resolve the dispute may lead to the loss of $1.5 billion in American aid set aside for Egypt this year.

The son of transportation secretary Ray LaHood is among the group going to trial. The group has been banned from leaving the country.
