Pepperdine University president's son sentenced

LOS ANGELES

Benton pleaded no contest in a plea deal on September 7 to making criminal threats and possession of a firearm by a narcotic addict. The plea deal allowed three other counts to be dismissed.

Benton, son of Pepperdine University President Andrew K. Benton, was arrested Aug. 23 by Los Angeles County sheriff's personnel at the Malibu campus, one day after threatening his father during a family argument, authorities said. He has been in custody since then.

According to court papers, he was convicted in two drug-related cases in 2005 and 2009 and a petty theft case in 2003.
