Car slams into Riverside bus bench; 2 killed, 2 injured

RIVERSIDE, Calif.

The incident happened at about 1 p.m. at Magnolia Avenue and Tyler Street. Authorities say the driver of a maroon car lost control, careened across three lanes of traffic, struck a light pole and then collided into a bus stop, where four people were waiting for the bus.

A 28-year-old woman, who was pinned underneath the car, and a 7-year-old girl were pronounced dead at the scene. A man and a woman were transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.

Investigators say the driver, a 45-year-old man from Riverside, was detained for questioning as investigators look into the cause of the crash. Police say he did not appear to be under the influence, and witnesses say he was not speeding. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

It was unclear if the driver was charged with any crimes. Authorities said he was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The identities of those involved were not immediately released.

The intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Tyler Street was closed for police investigation.
