LAUSD adding security aides to boost safety

LOS ANGELES

Starting Friday, at least two aides will be added to LAUSD's more than 400 elementary schools. The district is spending $4.2 million to hire at least 1,000 campus aides to increase security at elementary schools.

The aides will work three-hour shifts. They won't be armed but will be equipped with two-way radios and vests. They were trained through an online program for a variety of circumstances including child abuse awareness, conflict resolution and threat response.

School officials say the positions will be filled by former LAUSD employees who have been laid off.

Critics say the new aides should be uniformed, fully trained and work full time.
