Double shooting in Artesia leaves 1 man dead, 1 hospitalized

ARTESIA, Calif. (KABC) -- Two men were struck, one of them fatally, early Thursday morning in a drive-by shooting in Artesia, authorities said.

The incident took place about 12:17 a.m. in the 11900 block of 167th Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

One man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators said. He was not immediately identified.

A second gunshot victim was transported to a hospital with an arm wound that was not life-threatening.

The two men had just gotten off work and were hanging out in front of a home when the gunfire erupted.

"Most of the people were asleep," said sheriff's Sgt. Marcelo Quintero. "They did hear a vehicle that sped away," westbound on 167th Street.

A section of the street was shut down as homicide detectives remained at the scene.

"At this point we're relying on the neighborhood to give us any information that they can provide," Quintero said. "We're going to canvas for further surveillance systems and things of that nature."

Coroner's officials responded to the location and removed the deceased victim's body hours after the shooting.

The suspects' vehicle was described only as dark-colored.

The victims had no gang affiliations, according to investigators. The suspects are believed to be gang members.

"Anybody can get mistaken by anybody for an ignorant drive-by," said one man who lives in the neighborhood. "I'll keep my eye over my shoulder a little bit more. That's about it."
