GLENDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- Members of the Boys & Girls Club together with ABC7 Los Angeles helped young students get ready for the new school year on Thursday.

Eyewitness News reporter Elex Michaelson helped welcome about 100 kids from the L.A. Alliance of the Boys & Girls Club of America to ABC7's Glendale studios. Together, they stuffed about 1,000 backpacks with school supplies for younger members of the club.

The event helped kicked off a 24-hour virtual fundraiser called "Bell Heard Around the Web," which aims to raise $500,000 for the Boys & Girls Club. People wishing to participate can donate at GreatFuturesLA.org or text the phrase 'GreatFuturesLA' to 50155. The fundraiser ends 3 p.m. Friday.

The day also served as a reminder that every child needs a safe place to learn and grow.

"There's so many things going on in the world right now, and it's just a great reminder that there is a strong need to support our kids and change the negative trends that are happening right now for their future," said Mary Hewitt with the Boys & Girls Club of America.
