High school football player stabbed outside Taco Bell in Camarillo

NEWBURY PARK, Calif. (KABC) -- A 16-year-old varsity football player who just transferred to Newbury Park High School died Tuesday morning after being stabbed during an argument outside a Taco Bell in Camarillo.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of the fast-food restaurant in the 1500 block of Flynn Road at about 1:17 p.m. Monday.

Camarillo police said the victim's friends became involved in a yelling match with another group of men and the altercation turned physical. Daniel Morales was stabbed during the dispute.

He was driven to the Ventura County Medical Center by a friend at the scene, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators tracked down the suspect, 20-year-old Tyler James Ostertag, at a motel in Riverside. Ostertag was arrested for murder and booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility. His bail was set at $1 million.

Morales' friends say he had just transferred to Newbury Park High School from Camarillo High School. He wore the number 30 on the field.

Brandon Carney says he and Morales were looking forward to spending their senior year together.

"He's a big husky guy, but he's a teddy bear, man. He's just a great guy," Carney said, adding that it's going to be tough moving on without his best friend.

The motive for the dispute remains unclear, but investigators say the incident did not appear to be gang-related.
