High surf, tides expected along Southern California coast

SEAL BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory across Southern California due to the combination of astronomical high tides and swell from a storm in the Gulf of Alaska.

The coastal flood advisory went into effect at 7 a.m. Tuesday and will expire at 2 p.m. Friday in Los Angeles County. Coastal flood advisories also will be in force in Ventura and Orange counties. The advisory issued for Orange County will expire at 9 p.m. Thursday.

High tides are expected to reach well over 6 feet at midmorning Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Locations prone to coastal flooding include Seal Beach, Long Beach, Venice Beach, Malibu, Port Hueneme and Ventura.

The expected conditions could generate flooding of such low-lying areas as beach parking lots, adjacent streets and, possibly, structures.

Sandbags to help protect homeowners against flooding were available for pickup at fire stations in Venice, Westchester, Playa Vista and Mar Vista.
