COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- Compton Mayor Aja Brown spoke out Monday regarding allegations that she and council members have been illegally boosting their salaries for years. Brown was interviewed by KJLH radio station in Inglewood.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Brown and other council members payed themselves for commission meetings that sometimes lasted only about a minute. Brown said council compensation reform has always been on her agenda.
"I believe that we can come to a consensus to address repaving our streets, adding additional lighting, addressing our new public safety, all the basic services that we need," Brown said. "I don't believe that we deserve to have full salaries, and that was stated in public record July 28th before I actually received a letter from the D.A."
In that letter, the district attorney's office reportedly warned Compton officials could be prosecuted if the high payments continued.
