Covina officer, killed in crash, honored at funeral

COVINA, Calif. (KABC) -- Friends and family members of a Covina police officer killed in a crash gathered on Tuesday to say their final goodbyes.

Officer Jordan Corder's funeral took place at Pomona First Baptist Church at 11 a.m.

Corder grew up in Covina, where he attended school and then followed in his father's footsteps as a police officer.

The 28-year-old officer was killed Sept. 30 when an SUV made a left turn and clipped his motorcycle. Authorities say he was thrown from his bike onto the roadway following the crash at the intersection of North Citrus Avenue and West Puente Street in Covina. He was on duty at the time of the crash.

He was transported to Citrus Valley Medical Center, where he passed away.

Corder was a seven-year veteran of the force and a second-generation officer. His father is a retired Covina police captain. Corder leaves behind his wife, mother and sister.

The officer was recognized earlier this year by Mothers Against Drunk Driving for making more than 100 DUI arrests in 2013.

Loved ones gathered Monday night for the viewing at the mortuary.

The U.S. Honor Flag was flown into Los Angeles International Airport for Corder's funeral on Tuesday.

It has been nearly a year since the U.S. Honor Flag was at LAX. It was flown in last November to honor TSA Agent Gerardo Hernandez, who was shot and killed at the airport. Over the years, the Honor Flag has honored thousands of fallen police officers, firefighters, first responders and those serving active combat duty in the military.

Following Tuesday morning's funeral, there was a procession to Covina's Forest Lawn Memorial Park for a graveside service with full police honors.
