Tigers, chimps, other exotic animals rescued from path of Sand Fire

SYLMAR, Calif. (KABC) -- Residents near the Sand Fire worked quickly to evacuate horses and ponies as flames raged on the hillsides and smoke choked the region near Santa Clarita.

Further up Little Tujunga Canyon Road, the Wildlife Waystation had a bigger job on its hands.

The sanctuary hosts more than 400 exotic animals, such as tigers, bears and chimpanzees.

Neighbors answered the call to help out with evacuations, bringing in trailers to help move some of the animals.

Many of the larger, more dangerous animals, such as a Bengal tiger, had to be sedated before they could be moved.

Getting the animals out quickly and safely was a top priority.

Now Wildlife Waystation organizers are hoping these animals will have a home to return to.
