Fireworks legal in Anaheim for first time in 30 years

ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) -- For the first time in 30 years, fireworks are legal in Anaheim.

Voters chose to bring safe and sane fireworks back after passing Measure E last year. The city says more than 60 non-profits will receive a percentage of the sales.

"It means more money for the non-profits, which is why I voted for it. I know there are a lot of people who don't like it. They're worried about safety and fire hazards," Anaheim resident Stephanie Kramer said.

Safety concerns led to the ban in Anaheim in the 1980s.

Anaheim Fire Chief Randy Bruegman pointed to significant apartment fires believed to be started by the fireworks.

"We're not big fans of even safe and sane fireworks just because we know that injuries can occur and property can be lost as a result of inappropriate use," Bruegman said.

This July 4th, Anaheim Fire Department will bring in extra staff. Residents should see extra patrols.

Safe and sane fireworks are still banned in some parts of the city, including Anaheim Hills, city parks, parking lots and streets.

"Those who are setting off fireworks illegally, even safe and sane fireworks, prior to July 4th can be cited," said Ruth Ruiz, a spokeswoman for the city of Anaheim.
