Crash, possible freeway shooting investigated in Fontana

FONTANA, Calif. (KABC) -- A crash and a possible freeway shooting shut down the 10 Freeway in Fontana early Friday morning as police investigated the incident.

The California Highway Patrol said a collision involving a white truck into a center divider was reported at about 4 a.m. near Citrus Avenue on the 10 East. Soon after, another party called 911 saying he had crashed with the white truck and was shot at by the driver.

Due to a person possibly being armed, both directions of the freeway were temporarily shut down as Fontana police, San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies and CHP officials responded to the scene.

A felony stop was performed on the white truck that had crashed, CHP said, and deputies found the driver unresponsive. The driver, who was unconscious, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

While the incident was being investigated as a possible car-to-car shooting, police say they have found no gun and no bullet hole damage, but the suspect was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

As for the driver who reported being shot at, he said he's convinced a shooting occurred and it was likely due to road rage.

The alleged victim told police the suspect ran a red light, cut him off and then swerved onto the freeway before allegedly shooting at him.

"I was being shot at on the freeway, so it freaked me out and I swerved and hit him," the unidentified man said.

By 6 a.m., the westbound lanes were reopened, and the eastbound side opened at 7:30 a.m.
