New comedy 'Fresh off the Boat' docks at ABC
A real-life Asian-American experience inspires the new ABC comedy 'Fresh off the Boat.' (Air date: Feb. 4, 2015)

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Actor Randall Park spent the end of 2014 dealing with the ramifications of playing Kim Jong Un in the movie, "The Interview."

"International incidents, world news, it's old hat for me," Park joked.

Now, he's going for laughs on the small screen in the new comedy "Fresh off the Boat." The series is inspired by restaurant owner turned best-selling author Eddie Huang, and his experiences growing up with immigrant parents.

Park plays Eddie's Dad. Actress Constance Wu stars as him Mom. The show is a family comedy, where the cast just happens to be Asian-American.

"It's just like a show with an all-white cast, some people will relate, and some will say that's not my experience. That's how it will be with our show," Wu said. "There will be Latina people who relate to our show, and there will be Asian people who don't, and Asian people who do. So I think the more we have shows that normalize Asians as leads and don't necessarily exoticize it, I think that's just progress."

"It's a comedy, so there's a lot of kind of boundary-pushing here and there, in terms of types of jokes," Park said. "But overall, one of the reasons why I love the show so much is it has a lot of heart."

Huang is an executive producer and serves as narrator for the show. His real parents even got involved in pre-production!

"They recorded themselves reading our lines for us for the pilot," Wu revealed.

Park added, "We got to fly out to Orlando and meet them. That was a fun time."

"Fresh off the Boat" airs Feb. 4 in a special double preview on ABC before and after "Modern Family." It moves to its regular time slot, Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Feb. 10.
