SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- One year ago, San Bernardino police Officer Marcus Pesquera was involved in a gun battle with gang members.
His training officer, Gabe Garcia, was critically wounded in the firefight and Pesquera was only 45 days out of the police academy.
On Thursday, Pesquera spoke for the first time about the incident.
"At first, I was almost in shock when I heard the gunshots. You never really expect to have that happen to you," he said during a press conference.
Pesquera is being honored for the quick action he took that day. He is up for the Governor's Medal of Valor, making him the first recipient in the history of the San Bernardino Police Department.
He said he and Garcia were on a routine patrol when they ran into a group of people. When the officers got out of their car to approach them, someone opened fire. Garcia was struck in the head.
Pesquera said he remained focused when he called for backup, and all the while returned fire. He ended up killing the suspect, 38-year-old Alex Alvarado.
"It's remarkable. Usually a veteran of seven to 10 years on the street sometimes would not have responded as quickly as Pesquera," Lt. Rich Lawhead said.
Since that day, the 23-year-old father of one said it has impacted how he patrols, remaining vigilant and cautious.
Pesquera will receive the medal in Sacramento in September during a private ceremony with Gov. Jerry Brown.
