Driver charged in Hacienda Heights crash that killed young couple

HACIENDA HEIGHTS, Calif. (KABC) -- Prosecutors said they have charged the driver of a car that hurtled through air and into a pickup truck, killing two high school sweethearts in Hacienda Heights back in October.

Key Kim, 68, has been charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter, according to officials.

Investigators said Key Kim's speeding Lexus lost control exiting the 60 Freeway at 7th Avenue and slammed into a Toyota truck, shearing it in half on Oct. 18.

George A. Steward and Sabrina D. Castillo, both 18 and recent graduates of Los Altos High School, were in the truck at the time of the crash.

Steward and Castillo were pronounced dead at the scene.

Key Kim, and his passenger, 62-year-old Young Kim, were rushed to the hospital and survived their injuries.

At the time of the fatal crash, police said they did not believe alcohol played a role in the incident.

Key Kim was set to be arraigned on Friday at the El Monte courthouse.
