Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run crash in Sylmar
A hit-and-run collision in Sylmar on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017 left a woman dead and prompted a search for a driver.

SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A woman was in a crosswalk and had a green light when she was struck and killed by a car that fled the scene in Sylmar on Tuesday evening, authorities said.

The hit-and-run collision was reported about 6:35 p.m. at Foothill and Glenoaks boulevards, just south of the 210 Freeway, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Officers from the agency's Mission and Valley Traffic divisions responded to the location and closed the intersection as an investigation got underway.

Authorities said the victim, who was not immediately identified, appeared to be in her 40s. Coroner's officials removed her body from the scene shortly before 11 p.m.

"That pedestrian was struck and either rode on that vehicle or was launched approximately 100 feet west of this crosswalk," said LAPD Detective Bill Bustos.

There were no skid marks on the road to indicate the driver attempted to avoid hitting the woman or slammed on the brakes after the impact.

The suspect's vehicle is described as a dark-colored, possibly black 4-door Saturn, according to investigators.

"We anticipate there is damage to the front of the vehicle -- possibly the grille, the hood and the windshield," Bustos said.
