HOMELAND, Calif. (KABC) -- The 43-year-old man charged in the hit-and-run death of a Homeland mother of two pleaded not guilty on Wednesday.
Felipe Avalos was charged with felony vehicular manslaughter, gross negligence and two counts of hit-and-run causing death or injury.
On April 29, Gonzales allegedly struck Jennifer Campbell and her friend from behind while they were walking home on Sultanas Road, just north of the 74 Freeway.
Campbell was killed and her friend was seriously injured.
The victim's family said Avalos apparently fled to Mexico and turned himself in at the urging of an attorney.
"I don't know why you would do this. You made me lose my mother. Now I don't have one," 10-year-old Anthony Campbell said.
Avalos' bail was set at $2 million. If convicted, he faces more than 12 years in prison.
