One man was killed and another injured Wednesday evening in a shooting near a golf course in Jurupa Valley, authorities said.

JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A 71-year-old man was killed and another injured Wednesday evening in a shooting near a golf course in Jurupa Valley, authorities said. The gunman was at large.

Jurupa Valley police officers responded shortly before 6:30 p.m. to a report of gunfire at the intersection of Linares and Moraga avenues, where they arrived to discover two male victims, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. The location is just outside the main entrance to the Jurupa Hills Country Club.

One of the men, described by investigators as an innocent bystander, was found dead inside his vehicle. The county Coroner's Bureau later identified him as Ronald Capotosto of Riverside. The husband and father was at an intersection less than a mile from his home when he was shot.

"We can say that the elderly male was not the intended target at this point," said sheriff's Deputy Mike Vasquez.

The other victim, a pedestrian, was transported to a hospital and treated for an injury that was not life-threatening, authorities said, adding that there was "no apparent affiliation" between the two men.

Referring to the wounded victim, Vasquez said, "We are looking into his involvement."

A witness said he "heard a bunch of gunshots" and saw a man slumped over inside the vehicle, which had "a bullet hole through the windshield."

"And I saw some dude on the ground. I thought he was trying to hide from the shots," the witness said. "I said: 'Are you good? Are you OK?' He's like, 'No, I'm shot.'"

The Sheriff's Department describe the shooter only as male, and said he fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Investigator Paz of the sheriff's Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777, or Investigator Fransik of the Jurupa Valley station at (951) 955-2600.
