LAX holds plane crash simulation to test emergency response times

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles International Airport conducted a full-scare, two-hour exercise Wednesday morning to test the response times of emergency crews when handling a plane accident.

The simulation, which is required by the Federal Aviation Administration, involved a Boeing 777 aircraft that crashed and caught fire. The crash site included a debris field and 150 volunteers acting as victims.

Crews needed to complete the simulation in under three minutes. About 500 firefighters and emergency crews took part in the drill as 200 officials observed the scene.

The simulation also included the use of LAX's six new million-dollar aircraft firefighter equipment.
