LAX throws birthday celebration for 95-year-old volunteer

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- You could say a volunteer at Los Angeles International Airport is flying high Friday. It's his 95th birthday, and airport staff wanted to show him just how much they appreciate his service.

A special birthday celebration was thrown at LAX for an airport volunteer marking a major milestone.

"Just roll along with what comes to you, and that's what I've done, and I've had fun doing it," said Dick Stout.

Ninety-five years of fun for Stout, and for the last 16 years it has included working at the information desk at LAX, helping travelers find their way.

"It's a combination of a long time doing a lot of things that I like to do," said Stout. "I'm doing this because I like it. It's fun to meet all these people, and I meet new people every day."

That curiosity is helping keep his mind sharp. A graduate of MIT and chemical engineer by trade, this spry senior citizen still plays his French horn and sings in a choir, but it's his work at LAX that he says keeps him soaring.

"The secret is keeping busy," said Stout.

The 95-year-old says his birthday wish is to keep working at LAX until he hits the century mark.

"Sometimes I got a joke for them so that they leave my desk in a happy mood; that's kind of fun," said Stout.
