CLAREMONT, Calif. (KABC) -- A 16-year-old boy visiting from China has been located in West Hollywood after vanishing from his Claremont hotel.
There were mixed emotions following a reunion between mother and son.
Wuwei was reported missing on Friday by his mother, just two days after they arrived in the area to check out colleges.
Wuwei's mother said that her son insisted on visiting Claremont McKenna College by himself that day. Police say the teenager voluntarily walked away from his hotel room at the Claremont Lodge around 12:42 p.m. and had not been seen ever since.
According to surveillance images, Wuwei was carrying two bags when he left the hotel. Investigators say the teen had his cellphone and credit cards on him, but it doesn't appear that they have been used. His mother says he had about $500 cash on him.
The mother says her son was being very secretive in the days before his disappearance.
On Monday around 2 p.m., the student was found sitting on a bench by himself in the 8400 block of Sunset Boulevard. Someone who saw him on the news recognized him and called police.
