Oregon school shooting: Suspect, 1 student dead
Oregon authorities say a gunman and one student are dead following a shooting at a Portland-area high school Tuesday morning.

TROUTDALE, Ore. -- Authorities in Oregon say a suspect and one student are dead following a shooting at a Portland-area high school Tuesday morning.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said multiple agencies responded to Reynolds High School in Troutdale just after 8 a.m. for a report of an active shooter. Detectives say a gunman entered the school and fatally shot a student with a rifle.

The suspect then likely killed himself, police said. Troutdale police said they spotted the suspect slumped on a toilet in a bathroom but couldn't see what was happening with him. Officers used a robot with a camera to investigate and discovered the suspect was dead.

The victim was identified a 14-year-old Emilio Hoffman, a freshman on the soccer team who was "loved by all," police Chief Scott Anderson said at a Tuesday news conference. He said Emilio was found in the boys' locker room.

Authorities have tentatively identified the gunman but his name is being withheld until his family is notified, Anderson said.

A teacher, identified as 50-year-old physical education instructor Todd Rispler, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated at the scene. Anderson said Rispler, though injured, went to the office and initiated the school lockdown procedure.

According to local news reports, the shooter was dressed in all black with a vest and a red helmet and was carrying a semi-automatic weapon.

The campus was placed on lockdown, and students were led out of the school with their hands on their heads. They were reunited with their parents in a supermarket parking lot.

The Oregon violence came less than a week after a gunman opened fire on a college campus in Seattle, killing a 19-year-old man and wounding two others. It follows a string of mass shootings that have disturbed the nation, including one on Sunday in Las Vegas that left two police officers and a civilian dead.
