MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (KABC) -- More than 15,000 fans filled Weingart Stadium for the 80th edition of the East Los Angeles Classic Friday night. The yearly football battle between Boyle Heights' Roosevelt High School and East Los Angeles' Garfield High School is about more than just the final score.
"This is what brings all of our community together," Arisay Gonzalez said. "We come and we celebrate, even though win or lose, we still become a family here."
Because these two schools are separated by just five miles, family members can be found on both sides of the rivalry.
"It's about generations of families to come watch this game, you know, there is rivals on both sides but they could be family members," Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar said.
Garfield High School beat Roosevelt High School, 42-7.
