VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Five people, including three kids, were taken to the hospital after a disturbance at Van Nuys Elementary School on Monday.

Police responded to the school around 8:39 a.m. after receiving a report of an assault. Authorities say three students and two adults with non-life threatening injuries were transported to the hospital as a precaution.

In a phone message sent out to parents, school officials said the incident involved a school employee.

"Due to a safety concern we had to contact school police, Los Angeles Fire Department, and the paramedics. Those involve were treated for non-life threatening injuries and the employee will not be returning to our school," officials said in the message. "During any emergency, the safety of your children is our primary concern. All procedures were implemented according to District policy."

Parents and students told Eyewitness News that the employee was a teacher's aide.

"We just see a woman screaming at a wall, saying, 'Hey children, get back here!' And then she throws her paper...and then she says, 'I quit!'" said fifth-grader Mauricio Diaz. "My friend sees everybody run to the...cafeteria, so we ran to the cafeteria too. We asked my teacher what's going on and she said, 'The crazy woman that you were nearby got hit in the head.'"

The incident remains under investigation by LAUSD police.
