This day in history: Nintendo releases the NES
Nintendo released the NES on July 15, 1983. The miniature NES Classic is about to go back on sale.

The 8-bit gaming system that introduced the world to "Super Mario Bros." and "The Legend of Zelda" was released 33 years ago Friday.

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was originally released in Japan on July 15, 1983 as the Family Computer (Famicom). The red and white Famicom was redesigned for the U.S. into the grey and black NES and was made available to American gamers in 1985.

According to Nintendo, the NES has sold over 60 million consoles and 500 million games worldwide.

On July 14, Nintendo announced the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition. The miniature version of the classic gaming system will feature 30 built-in games and an HDMI connection. It will be available on November 11.
