NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- For years, Ruth Brajevich has strapped on her running shoes and stepped into a world of pink.
The breast cancer survivor is getting ready to hit the pavement for Sunday's Susan G. Komen "More Than Pink" Walk in Newport Beach.
"I feel very strongly that the work they're doing in local communities to help women is so important," Brajevich said.
It's a cause that is near and dear to her.
At 42, Brajevich was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in her second mammogram.
"Ended up having a bilateral mastectomy and breast reconstructive surgery," she said.
Five years later, her younger sister was diagnosed.
"She was pregnant," Brajevich said. "Had her baby, went into remission and then sadly, a couple years after, the cancer came back and we lost her in 2021."
Since the tragedy, Brajevich has been raising funds to help prevent and find a cure for breast cancer.
Sunday's event is aiming to raise nearly $800,000 for breast cancer research.
In the meantime, she's been finding strength with other survivors.
"It's a very lonely experience," Brajevich admitted. "The walk... really helps you see how much you're part of a bigger community. And that there's so much love and support for you. It's a beautiful and inspiring event."
With the walk happening at Fashion Island, she's also pushing early detection.
"I really encourage all of you to please get screening, get a mammogram," she said. "Please be proactive about your health. It can make all the difference."
There is still time to join Sunday's walk. The event begins with an 8:30 a.m. opening ceremony, with walkers stepping off at 9 a.m.

Pacific Life at Fashion Island is located at 700 Newport Center Dr., in Newport Beach.
