New video shows suspect hitting pedestrian during Culver City chase

CULVER CITY, Calif. (KABC) -- Eight pedestrians, including a 15-year-old, were struck by a suspect who led Culver City police on a dangerous chase, and new video shows the chaos that unfolded.

The incident began around 7 p.m. Tuesday following a report of a hit-and-run crash near the intersection of Centinela Avenue and Washington Boulevard.

Multiple pedestrians were struck when a driver led police on a dangerous chase that ended in a crash at a Los Angeles McDonald's drive-thru, authorities say.

Culver City police say the suspect hit one person, then tried to fill up at a gas station before driving off and hitting three more pedestrians. Officers were able to find the white car and the chase ensued.

Once the pursuit was underway, the suspect driving a white car hit four other people. New video from a Culver City police shows the suspect plowing into a 19-year-old pedestrian who was crossing the street.

The victims range from 15 to 70 years old. They suffered injuries described as non-life threatening to serious.

Police say the suspect, only identified as a 45-year-old man, appeared to be intentionally trying to run them over but the motive was unclear.

"Recognizing the severity of this suspect's actions and the recklessness and the danger he was putting our community in - that was why our officers continued to engage in pursuing him.... He clearly had no regard for human life on the road," said Jennifer Atenza, public information officer for the Culver City Police Department.

Multiple cars were also hit during the chase.

The chase ended when the suspect crashed at a McDonald's drive-thru in Los Angeles, where officers took the driver into custody, police said. An officer was injured at the end of the chase but is in stable condition with injuries that are not life-threatening, Atenza said.

The suspect is being held in the Culver City jail. He's now facing a long list of charges including felony hit-and-run and multiple counts of attempted murder.

An investigation is ongoing.
