DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Two burglary suspects who were being chased by police crashed into a Metro bus in the Westlake area Friday afternoon, injuring themselves and several others.

The crash was reported just before noon near 6th and Bixel streets, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

AIR7 was over the scene where a silver SUV appeared to have significant front damage.

At least nine people were injured in the crash.

Three people were taken to the hospital. One person on the bus was in fair condition, while the two suspects were said to be in serious condition.

A police officer was also injured. His condition is unknown.

The Los Angeles Police Department said several people were taken into custody.

An officer told Eyewitness News the situation could have been much worse. The suspects crashed into the axle of the bus, so the metal took most of the impact. If the SUV would have crashed into the accordion section in the middle of the bus, there could have possibly been fatalities.

"Metro extends its wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured and thanks the Los Angeles Police and Fire Departments for their assistance," LA Metro said in a statement.

Additional details about the pursuit and the crash were not immediately available.
