North Hollywood neighborhood evacuated after explosives found in home

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A North Hollywood neighborhood was evacuated Wednesday morning after the LAPD responded to a report of explosives found at a home, authorities said.

A caller reported the discovery at 9:10 a.m. in the 6100 block of Rhodes Avenue, between the 170 Freeway and Whitsett Avenue, according to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Responding officers were asking residents in the immediate area to evacuate, the spokesperson told ABC7.

The LAPD bomb squad was called to the scene as part of the investigation. LAPD said about 20 sticks of dynamite, totaling approximately 11 pounds, were found inside a freezer and safely removed by LAPD bomb squad.

The department also said that they believe the dynamite was owned by the late husband of the homeowner. He passed away in 2014.

It appears the husband used to clear roads back in the day and investigators think he may have thought it was safer to keep the dynamite in the freezer, according to LAPD.

No known threats were associated with the reporting call, and no injuries were reported, according to authorities. There is no criminal investigation.
