Facebook helps find abducted newborn in Canada

MONTREAL (KABC) -- Thanks to an Amber Alert, Facebook and some amateur detective work, a group of friends helped rescue a kidnapped newborn baby in Canada.

The newborn girl, named Victoria, was kidnapped from a hospital in Quebec one day after being born. Around 7 p.m. Monday, a woman posing as a nurse allegedly convinced the baby's parents that she needed to take the baby.

"We don't know why she's here. She tells us she has a routine test to do with the baby. We said, 'OK, that's cool.' But we found something weird with this," said the baby's father, Simon Boisclair.

By 10 p.m., police issued an Amber Alert, looking for the abductor who was believed to be driving a red Toyota with a "Baby On Board" sticker. The alert went viral on social media.

The young group of friends-- identified as Melizanne Bergeron, Charlene Plante, Marc-Andre Cote and Sharelle Bergeron -- said they were bored Monday night and decided to go look for the red Toyota.

To their surprise, one of them recognized the suspect as one of their former neighbors. They went straight to the suspect's home and spotted the red car.

"We saw the window open with the lights. We know that there's people in the house," said Bergeron.

They called police immediately, and within minutes, police broke down the door and rescued the baby girl.

"Thirty seconds after the baby was in the hands of the police and we saw the baby...it was best moment in my life. We were crying," said Bergeron.

People cheered and clapped as baby Victoria was brought back to her parents unharmed.

Hours later, Victoria's parents posted a picture of mother and daughter, thanking everyone who helped find their baby girl.

"Every click, every share made the difference," the infant's mother, Melissa McMahon, wrote Tuesday in a post on her Facebook page.

They gave special thanks to the four young heroes, who are humbled by the emotional experience.

"The mother was crying and she was very happy," said Plante. "I don't realize it (yet), I'm just a person like (anybody else) and I saved a life."

The suspect -- a woman in her 20s -- was taken to a hospital to undergo a mental evaluation. Quebec police say she will be charged when she is released.
